Question:

Why are mattress sizes different in each country except the queen size?

 Answer:

Actually, almost all the sizes are different. Some of the variations are caused by the differences in using the metric system of measurement vs. the English system.

But not all variations are easily explained.

Below are the most popular sizes for the U.S., U.K. and the rest of Europe.

  • Measurements are given in both centimeters and inches.

Popular U.S. mattress sizes

  • King = 183 cm x 203 cm – 72 in x 80 in
  • Queen = 152 cm x 203 cm – 60 in x 80 in
  • Full = 135 cm x 191 cm – 54 in x 75 in
  • Twin = 97 cm x 191 cm – 39 in x 75 in

In the next section, note how the U.K. does not have a queen size mattress.

  • Instead, they have a King Size, which is almost the same as the U.S. Queen size, except for being 2″ shorter.
    • The Grand King (also known as Super King) is 7″ narrower than the U.S. King Size.
    • The U.K. Double mattress is almost the same as the U.S. full size (which is also sometimes called a Double.)
    • The U.K. Single Mattress is the same length as the U.S. Twin, but is 3.5 inches narrower.

Several of the U.K. measurements are 1″ less than their U.S. equivalents. That is primarily due to rounding errors when measuring in cm.

Popular U.K. mattress sizes

  • Grand King = 180 cm x 200 cm – 71 in x 79 in
  • King = 152 cm x 198 cm – 60 in x 78 in
  • Double = 135 cm x 190 cm – 53 in x 75 in
  • Single = 90 cm x 190 cm – 35.5 in x 75 in

The rest of Europe differs from most of the U.K. sizes.

  • The Grand King is the same in Europe and the U.K.
  • European King Size (U.S. Queen size) is 3″ wider and 1″ longer.
  • European Double is 2″ wider and 4″ longer than the U.K. Double.
  • European Single is the same width but 4″ longer than the U.K. Single.

Popular European mattress sizes:

  • Grand King = 180 cm x 200 cm – 71 in x 79 in
  • King = 160 cm x 200 cm – 63 in x 79 in
  • Double = 140 cm x 200 cm – 55 in x 79 in
  • Single = 90 cm x 200 cm – 35.5 in x 79 in
