What’s the most unsafe piece of furniture?

By Jeff Frank

Two items come to mind.

  • Baby cribs
  • Tall chests

IKEA recently had a massive recall for unsafe chests that tipped over when kids tried climbing up using the drawers.

Many companies (including IKEA) now have safety straps that anchor the chests to the wall.
Baby cribs are constantly being checked and monitored for potential problems. There have been many recalls over the years.

One of the largest baby furniture manufacturers, Simplicity Baby Furniture was forced into bankruptcy because of a major recall in 2010.

Although not directly related to furniture, there are currently warnings about crib bumper pads.

At this time there have not been any recalls, but several states have already banned the sale of crib bumpers citing potential risks.
