Is Scotchguard the Best Upholstery Protector for Furniture?

By Jeff Frank

Question

Hi, I’m looking for sofa fabric protector, I found the link on google: https://www.fabricers.com/best-fabric-protector-and-upholstery-protectors-reviews/ they recommend some other products for the sofa! But you seem to recommend Scotchguard! Should I go for Scotchguard?

Answer

I don’t recommend Scotchguard or any other fabric protection for most fabrics.

It is completely worthless on any “high performance” fabrics like Crypton, Sunbrella, Revolution, Bella-Dura, LiveSmart, etc. The spray would just bead up and drop off most of those.

After 20 years of seeing these products sprayed on synthetic fabrics like polyesters, nylons, acrylics and olefins, I can’t tell that they add any protection to the natural stain resistance of the fabrics.

They do add protection for natural fibers like cotton and linen.

BUT! Before you add fabric protection, be aware that adding any fabric protection (or using any cleaning products) will void most warranties (including extended warranties.)
