Can a sofa originally upholstered with tight (attached) back cushions be reupholstered with loose (removable) back cushions?

Answer:

It would be very unusual for it to be possible to change a tight back to loose cushions without extensive reconstruction of the frame.

• Going the other way (loose cushions to a tight back) can usually be done for a reasonable cost.
• If your sofa has semi-attached back cushions, it should be possible to change to loose back cushions.
