When a back cushion is stuffed with loose polyester fiber (or feathers/down) these lightweight fillers are blown into the inner fabric ticking using a blowing machine.
- After the ticking is full, the fabric is sewn up to prevent the fiber (or feathers) from leaking out.
- Throw pillows are also usually made by blowing fiber into a fabric cover.
- Blowing fiber (or feathers) is much more efficient (and less wasteful) than attempting to stuff these lightweight materials by hand.
Seat cushions made with foam (or coil springs) are not filled by blowing.
- Foam cores are usually wrapped with polyester, but this is a sheet of polyester that is glued to the foam, not loose fibers.
