Where Can I Find Hand Crafted Wood Furniture?

By Jeff Frank

Where Can I find hand crafted wood furniture?

Long ago, I saw beautiful hand made bedroom & dining room furniture being sold at a Crafts fair.

The furniture was made-to-order by local artisans.

I have no idea where to find that kind of furniture where I live. Google doesn’t help.

Is There a List of Individual Artisans or Small Shops That Make Hand-Crafted Custom-Built Furniture?

Answer:

This article lists over 100 artisans & small shops.

These are artisans that make & sell hand crafted wood furniture.

Custom built bedroom, dining room, & living room furniture are available nationwide.

The listings below include the company website, telephone number, shop location, and a brief description of the furniture they make.

Most of the companies listed make and sell their own hand crafted wood furniture.

A few small retail shops that specialize in selling handmade furniture from multiple artisans are also included.

Wood furniture

Over 80% of wood furniture sold in U.S. stores is imported and mass produced.

Some of the highest quality wood furniture can be bought direct from small custom shops or from individual craftspeople.

Furniture artisans often specialize in very specific styles or types of furniture:

Here is a list of companies & shops specializing in custom woodworking.

Expert woodcrafters are more difficult to find than expert upholsterers.

Small furniture workshops, individual artisans and craftspeople often sell to individuals.

Interior design professionals are also big customers for many of these small furniture shops & individual craftspeople.

Many of the descriptions below were provided by the companies listed. Many are mine.

Several of the companies listed have very few furniture makers. Some have only a single craftsperson.

These small companies may go out of business or change their contact information.

Please notify me if any updates or corrections are needed.

Please help me add to this list.

If any of my readers know of an individual or small company specializing in high quality hand-crafted furniture, please let me know.

Fable Porch

Danbury, NC (336) 793-0112

As master craftsman and founder, furniture has been my life. I started working in the industry while in college and never looked back.

Mastering speciality finishes on nights and weekends, I founded my first custom furniture company in 1993 in Winston-Salem NC. Back then, furniture makers, large and small, made furniture pretty much their way, and that’s the way it was.

Custom changes in size & color outside of what they offered could be expensive, if offered at all.

So a new way of doing things was born and would eventually culminate in what folks today know as the Fable Porch series by March Legend ®.

We are the original custom country & cottage furniture company.

Thousands of small custom upholsterers exist all over the U.S.

Many of these artisans are experienced upholsterers laid off from larger manufacturers that closed down.

Thousands of upholstered furniture factories went out of business in the Recessions of the 1990s and from 2007 to 2010.

Experienced interior design professionals will know which custom upholsterers in your area are the best.

The best custom upholsterers may have long waiting times. They can be very picky about which clients they will work for.

In general, they prefer to avoid working directly with non professionals.

They may also avoid interior design professionals they consider too “picky” or who micromanage, by trying to change specifications mid-way through the project.

Changing specs wastes time and materials. Usually, customers do not want to pay for fixing mistakes made in the original specifications.

Custom upholstery can be surprisingly affordable.

Many furniture shoppers believe that custom upholstered furniture is too expensive for them.

But that is not necessarily true!

There are several things you can do to keep prices reasonable and still get a high quality sofa, made by expert craftspeople, that will last 20+ years.

Avoid high priced leathers and fabrics.

Discontinued high quality leathers and fabrics are always available at huge discounts.

Check out my article Do Discount Fabric Stores & Online Websites Really Sell Quality Fabrics at 50% Off?

Avoid patterned fabrics that require matching.

Patterned fabrics require 30% – 50% more yardage.

Matched pattern fabrics take far longer to upholster, adding hundreds of dollars to your sofa price.

Stick to simple, basic frame designs.

Unusual or curved shapes and larger sizes will cost more.

5/4″ solid hardwood frames will last for 50 years.

Good quality plywood frames will last 20+ years and save hundreds of dollars.

Avoid reclining or sleeper sofas.

Mechanisms can be expensive when not purchased in bulk.

Both reclining and sleeper mechanisms add substantial cost and also reduce a sofa’s lifespan.

Discuss other ways to economize with your upholsterer.

He may have additional suggestions based on what is available to him through local suppliers.

Do not economize on cushions.

Ask for Spring Down (or Spring Fiber) seat cushions.

They will add $100 – $200 to your sofa’s cost, but will last 15+ years with no loss of comfort.

If you insist on foam, get 2.5 density. It lasts 3x longer than the industry standard 1.8 density.

Qualux is the best quality foam brand and will last longer than other foams with the same density.

Pricing may also vary depending on other conditions.

Upholsterers charge more when they have large order backlogs.

Be friendly! Fussy or unpleasant customers are often charged higher prices.

Small custom upholstery shops, selling direct to the public, are easy to find.

Thousands of small upholstered furniture shops are spread nationwide.

Every large or mid-size population center will have several small custom upholstery furniture shops.

Thousand of upholstery factories have closed over the past 25 years.

Many of the most highly skilled upholsterers from factories started their own upholstery workshops, where they do reupholstery and custom upholstery.

Setting up a custom upholstery shop does not cost much for an experienced upholsterer who already owns the basic tools.

Used machinery is usually available at a fraction of the original cost.
